WARNER ROBINS, Ga.-- Warner Robins High School will begin its second season with a boys’ club volleyball team as the Demons start season play at East Coweta High School Monday, March 27.

Volleyball is already an established sport in the city among females but just recently began to grow as a sport for males as well. This year, Warner Robins is one of 26 teams in the league, the most thus far.

Warner Robins Coach Marlene Rogers began this program last year in hopes to grow the sport.

“I have coached volleyball for several years and began the first year of boys’ volleyball in 2016 at Veterans High School,” Rogers said. “I had a team at Veterans for four years and then the next year created a hybrid team with boys from all over the county. Last year we took two teams from Warner Robins High School to the state tournament.”

The play date will feature two other teams, including East Coweta High School and Trinity Christian. East Coweta won the state championship in 2019 and just rebooted their team for the 2023 season. Trinity Christian’s team is beginning its inaugural season at the playdate.

Last year was the first season for the Demons, and both teams made the silver bracket in the 2022 State Tournament. Needless to say, this team has been preparing for much more in the past year.

Both Rogers and the Demons expect to take the team further this season in many different ways.

“I really enjoy coaching the boys,” Rogers said. “They are athletic and pick up the skills quickly. The speed of the game keeps it exciting. The biggest challenge is finding teams to play. We compensate by playing men and alumni from the local area.”

Rogers also said that having the boys help with The Lady Demonettes’ team in the fall has helped them grow in skill and communication.

With boys’ volleyball growing rapidly in Georgia, it is Rogers’ hope for it to grow in Middle Georgia also.

“Each year boys’ volleyball grows in high school participation so we are hopeful that Houston County will have more than one High school boys’ team.” Rogers said. “Warner Robins will take two teams to the state tournament in May and we definitely will represent middle Georgia well.”

Senior Cian Lewis, one of the setters, had a few words about the upcoming games and season too.

“I know that with confidence we can do anything, and that goes for the rest of the season as well. I think we are really growing as a team,” Lewis said.
