GABRIEL JACOBS: freshman year

28 July 2021- One Step Away Athletics

Every young athlete has the desire to make it to the top. Some people wish it was given to them; others work for it. Gabriel Jacobs is the latter.

As an upcoming ninth grader, Jacobs has one thing on his mind: being an outstanding basketball player. However, he knows it’s not going to be that easy. Jacobs began his journey in his 5th grade year as he began playing basketball with the Warner Robins Express. With these experiences he learned how to have a harder work ethic.

That first year was frustrating” said Jacobs. “It was my first year playing travel ball and we didn’t win much. But losing is a part of the game and without losing you won’t know how to win.

As he wouldn’t be playing in the sixth grade (due to Houston County public schools not offering 6th grade athletics), Jacobs needed something to prepare himself for school ball.  In perfect timing, he found exactly what he needed. The very next year, 2018, he met someone who would soon become a strong influence in his life, his trainer for 4 years, Brandon Davey.

I originally met [Davey] at a Verizon store and since then he’s developed my game tremendously. He’s built on my game while also adding several aspects to it as well. He knows what it takes to get to the next level and has pushed me in a countless number of ways

Working with Davey not only helped him to achieve his goals, but Jacobs also was able to figure out exactly what these goals were and what steps he needed in order to achieve them.

From spending countless hours in the gym, he learned more and more about himself and the game as a whole. By the time his 7th grade year came around, Jacobs was more than prepared for middle school basketball.

After working constantly, Jacobs finally began playing for Warner Robins Middle School in 2020. The truth was, that this was only the beginning of his journey. In his seventh-grade year at Warner Robins Middle, Jacobs was the leading scorer and led his team to win the 2020 Houston County Championship. He went on to do this once more to finish out his middle school career with a game sealing 26 points in the 2021 Houston County Championship.

Finally out of middle school, Jacobs real tests are starting to begin. This summer he played ball at Warner Robins high school and plans to be a part of their team in the fall. Going into high school, he wants to learn as much as possible, find his role, and earn respect from the team. After talking about his future he stated the following:

“I’m still adjusting, but overall I am really looking forward to high school and what’s next for me. Coach Garman is a fantastic coach, he knows exactly what to do for our team and we have a solid squad. We are full of shooters and we have a fast offense and very pressuring defense. I think I will fit in well.”

As an upcoming freshman, Jacobs is doing his best to stay focused and is hoping for an outstanding first season. He looks forward to having a tremendous high school career and to break several barriers. Some of his goals are to be a state champion, to be an eventual team leader, and to be a model student outside of basketball with a 4.0 gpa. Ultimately, when asked what his main goal in life is, Gabriel Jacobs “looks to make his family proud and be the best he can be in anything he does, no matter what.”
